Baby Yeast Infection: What You Should Know

by linkroll

posted in Health and Fitness : Infections

Baby thrush is another term for baby yeast infection. It is a form of yeast illness that results when bacteria builds up in the infant’s private parts or mouth. It is noticeable on older children and also on new-borns. Though yeast infection in babies is not considered life threatening, it is known to cause discomfort in the baby.

Since baby yeast infection does not have symptoms, it is not easy to know when the baby is suffering from it. However, the easiest way of telling that your baby has thrush is by paying attention to their behavior. Often times, babies suffering from thrush are angry, grumpy and frustrated especially during feeding time. A white and gray curd-like and lacy area on the infant’s mouth or tongue is how thrush clinically presents itself. An infected baby will not keep the pacifier inside his/her mouth but will instead spit it out.

Baby yeast infection results from the use of antibiotics. Antibiotics are known to weaken the baby’s immune system thereby contributing to the growth of candida, the bacterium that causes the growth of yeast. The infection may be transmitted from mother to child. Infected mothers are likely to transmit infection to the child in the course of breastfeeding. It is possible for the infected mother to pass infection onto her baby during breast feeding. It is for this reason that parents are advised to always ensure that baby bottles and pacifiers are thoroughly cleaned. Humid and warm weather also cause the bacteria to thrive.

In the early stages, baby yeast infection is considered to be harmless. Nevertheless, it has severe side effects, case in point malnutrition as well as dehydration. Other side effects include discomfort and difficulty in suckling and swallowing. In later stages, the infection spreads to the infant’s gastro-intestinal system causing diaper rush.

Baby yeast infection is best dealt with by sterilizing such baby equipment as bottles and pacifiers. Keeping equipment dry is highly recommended as the bacteria that causes yeast mostly thrives in environments that are humid. It is important that you change the baby’s diapers as soon as they get soiled. Also clean the baby’s private parts and keep them dry. At all times, let the infant’s bottom air-dry for some time before placing the diapers. Make sure you don’t tie the diapers too tight. This stops the bacteria from flourishing. If the infection persists, you should consult pediatrician. He or she is able to treat the thrush by administering the correct drugs.
