Not many would have heard the term Kerberos even though most of us use it on daily basis.
Kerberos is a network authentication protocol that is used to establish secure connections between users and websites. In a normal network when a user is prompted for username and password he or she enters it and that password is authenticated by the network. With the use of Kerberos there is no need to send the passwords all the way to the internet. In connections with Kerberos an intermediate database is created that contains the passwords in the form of keys thus making the authentication process safer and quicker. Well, this should be a good answer if you were wondering how Kerberos works.
Some of the benefits that Kerberos bring to your network are:
One of the main advantages of using Kerberos is the advance password protection it offers. One of the USPs of using Kerberos is that you do not need to send the passwords all the way to the network instead the authentication is carried out with the help of secret keys which cannot be intercepted and even if the security is compromised somehow it would be almost impossible for a hacker to decode the information present in the keys.
The authentication that occurs via Kerberos is very durable and reusable. Once the user has been authenticated he or she can stay connected to the network until the authentication ticket expires. In simpler words until the session expires. Also, once a ticket has been used authentication it can be reused. Undoubtedly, such features make Kerberos very hard to resist.
The greatest advantage of using Kerberos is its popularity. Kerberos is the preferred authentication medium for big businesses, social networking sites etc. all over the world. With the amount of money currently invested in Kerberos it is unlikely that the developers will not fix any loophole in the system. So you can be sure that you will always get the maximum security.
Many people know this that Kerberos employ dual key encryption mechanism. This mechanism adds a lot of extra and secret security to the connection between the user and the website.
Because authentication in Kerberos is taken care by an intermediate database that contain specially formulated keys. Both the client and server end of the network needs to be authenticated in order to establish a connection. So after you have known how Kerberos works and what its benefits are, you are sure to use it.
