Inspiration - Returning to a Place I Loved - 37 Years Later

by Jeff Herring

9147 WestBrooke Dr. Overland Park, Kansas 913-888-6414

After 37 years I still remember the details.

I grew up as a young child in Miami, Florida. When I was 11 years old, my dad was transferred to Kansas City, Missouri. We settled on the Kansas side of Kansas City, in a small suburb called Overland Park.

All I knew about Kansas at age 11 came from Dorothy and The Wizard of Oz. I fell in love with the place. For a South Florida boy, this was a strange heaven. Hills, woods, streams, seasons, and snow. Walking to school on April 1, 1970 in 8 inches of snow. A three story house with a basement.

Then my dad was transferred again to Washington, DC. The move broke my heart.

All the rest of my life, I have wanted to see Overland Park again. So when I had the opportunity in the summer of '07 to drive from Atlanta to Denver for a convention, I jumped at the chance.

Can you believe it? The people that lived in my house had actually painted it a different color!

And of course, everything was smaller than I remembered it being as a child. At the same time, I remembered everything I saw. The hill across the street we used to jump our bikes on. The cul-de-sac where I learned to play kick the can. The steps on the side of the garage of the girl next door where I got my first kiss.

It was a nice way to spend an early Sunday morning on the way to Denver. I had planned to stop there again on the way back from Denver but then decided not to do so. I did not understand why I was not stopping again at first. Then it hit me that there were two very important reasons -

1. I wanted to remember it the way I did as a kid, and

2. I wanted to leave this time on my own terms.

I guess it will come as no surprise to anyone, after all those times my dad was transferred, that I have never had a full time job as an adult. I have always been self-employed.
