A Woman Of Honor

by Nona Nixon

I wanted to make everyone aware of this woman. Her name is Irena Sendler. This courageous woman was honored by the "Parliament" in Warsaw Poland, for her courageous acts performed during War World II. She is personally responsible for saving an estimated 2,500 Jewish children from the Nazi Regime. Sendler led twenty other people who smuggled Jewish children out of the "Warsaw Ghetto" stemming from 1940 - 1943 while placing these children in orphanages, with families, or even convents to hide them from the Nazi's. She wrote the names of all the children on slips of paper and placed them in jars, burying them in neighbor's yards. This was to be utilized as a record to aid Jewish parents in finding their children after the war was over. Do keep in mind during this time that anyone caught sympathizing with the "Jews" risked being killed by the "Nazi Regime", this of course did not stop Irena Sendler as well as her organization.

Irena Sendler was actually taken in and questioned on these activities. She was asked to give up the names of the children. She refused. She was tortured by the Nazi's, but never gave up the names of the children. She was eventually released due to the fact, they discovered she was not going to talk. I find it a true miracle they did not kill this woman, but she was very much willing to die as compared to giving up the names of the innocent Jewish children which she aided. This courageous lady who is now ninety-seven years old and lives in a nursing home in Warsaw Poland is rumored to be submitted for the Nobel Peace Prize. In my opinion, Irena Sendler deserves that honor.

How many of us if faced with a situation such as this would not talk? How many of us would actually die in order to save children. We can all say, "Of course I would die to save children", but would you really do it? I know of people here within our own nation whom would choose themselves over their own children, much less care about other people's children. Irena Sendler is an exemplary example of not only a great and strong woman, but human being. I'm sure all the Jewish children which she saved are grateful. I'm sure they still to this day view her as the "Angel" who walks among us and will be guaranteed a place among them in heaven.
