Should Freelance Writers Write For Free?

First off, by 'writing for free' we don't mean that you cave in to the irrational demands of clients who don't realize that quality comes at a price. If you run into a client who asks for free writing samples, run. Sprint. And don't look back.
So Why Should You Write For Free?
That's a million dollar question. Let us list out the few important reasons of why you should offer something you are good at, free of cost.
To Promote Yourself
Every online business needs good content, and if they don't have an in-house writing team, they turn to freelance writers. But before they can pick someone to do the job, you can grab their attention by offering your services for free, and who knows you might hit the jackpot.
If you think their home page needs a makeover, write brilliant content for it. If their blog lacks useful material, write a great blog and send it over. Whichever area you think the company needs help with in terms of writing, write it for free and show them what you have got. If they like it, you could be looking at a steady income.
To Rise above the Competition
As a freelance writer you are likely to have a profile on several freelancing websites where you bid for writing jobs along with a minimum of 10 other contenders. Chances that you will be awarded the job are slim; either because you don't have the required experience, or more commonly someone else agreed to work for peanuts.
You can rise above this incompetent competition by doing the job for free. Understand what the company is looking for and give them exactly that, or more. Write content which is so outstanding that they can't help but hire you.
To Become the Torero
If you are not up for direct pitching, you can take an alternative route and make the company come at your doorstep. Write an article or blog about a company you'd be interested in working for, and then try to get it published on a high-authority website. In case you don't succeed at that, use the power of social media and share your content there. Tag prominent figures like the CEO, Head of PR or Head of Marketing.
If you struck the right chords, someone from the company might already be typing your offer letter.
So if you want to take up freelance writing to not just pay your bills but as a serious, long-term profession, don't hesitate to put in some extra effort for free before you start earning more than you can handle.
And I hope by now your thoughts of me being crazy have changed.
