Public Death Records - 10 Ways to Conduct the Best Search

If you have an interest in genealogy and want to trace your own ancestry, you'll find that there's a wealth of information you can obtain from public records. In fact, public death records can provide you with invaluable help in learning about your own family history. Here are some important tips that can aid you in your search.

Searching for any public records can be difficult if all you have is a name. Therefore, it is beneficial if you can obtain additional search criteria, such as date or place of birth. You will find, particularly if your relatives have common names, that narrowing down the search will save you large amounts of time in the long run.

It is possible to obtain public records from your state or local authority. This is almost always free, but it may mean waiting for several days or weeks. In addition, in some local jurisdictions, you will need to perform the search yourself.

Similarly, state and local authorities can only provide you with records for that specific area. Therefore, if your family moved around or, more importantly, you do not know which states your family has resided in, your search can become very time-consuming.

You can, of course, use other routes to search for death records. Public records search sites charge for their services, but they provide almost immediate access to the data you have requested. In addition, you will not have to do any of the hard work and the search can cover several, if not all, states.

If you intend to use a public records search site, it is advisable to check the list of states that are included, because, as mentioned above, not all sites will have access to all states.

Many sites offer access to all public records. However, if you are searching your family history, you may wish to select a site that specializes in birth, death and marriage certificates.

Charges for searches will vary, so it is worth thinking about how much information you require from a service. In other words, there is no point in paying for much more detail than you need. Conversely, it is wise to ensure that you are getting what you need or want from the search.

To make sure you are getting what you expect from a search service, it is advisable to read the terms and conditions of service carefully. Of course, this will not make riveting reading, but it will ensure you are not surprised by hidden costs.

There are some 'free' public records search sites, but these are usually misleading at best and fraudulent at worst. That's not to say there are no genuine free sites, but they are hard to find. So, it may be worth selecting a site that is upfront and honest about its charges.

If, in addition to public death records, you are interested in search for other records, it is advisable to read the privacy policy of a search site, as some will inform the individual in question of the search request. Therefore, if you are looking for information about living relatives, you may want to ensure confidentiality.

Of course, these are just a few tips to help you search for your family history. However, the above will certainly allow you to select a reputable public records search site.
