One way to motivate people at work is to explain how doing what you want will help people achieve something they want regarding work assignments. Do this by considering that everyone has challenges and desires around getting work done. People look for ways to save time, reduce errors, increase productivity, and more.
These challenges and desires provide opportunities to make the connection between getting something you want and giving people something they want. In this instance, the focus is on giving people something that could help with their tasks, projects, or overall assignments.
Use these 7 Questions to uncover ways to make the connection between your desires and their workloads.
1. Has this person experienced problems with quality? How might doing what I want help this person be more accurate or have fewer errors?
2. Have there been instances when this person talked about being more productive? How can I connect his/her desire for increased productivity to my desire for a specific action?
3. Does this person talk about a need to meet deadlines for giving others information or getting information from others? In what ways can I use this knowledge to encourage a greater willingness to do what I want?
4. Does this person want more autonomy or independence in handling tasks? How can an action I want result in these freedoms?
5. Would this person like greater choices about the types of tasks to perform? What connections might I make between doing what I want and those choices?
6. Is this person receiving a large number of complaints from customers? Are there ways to connect my desires to fewer complaints?
7. Has this person expressed a desire to do a better job with delivering products or services? Can doing what I want lead to fulfillment of that desire?
