When Do You Change Your Marketing Strategy?

What are you good at? Seriously, what is the one thing that you consider yourself an expert at doing? That one thing you could explain to a five-year old so clearly that the "why's" and the "what's that's" would stop? What is it that you have spent every waking hour perfecting and refining? What if I told you to stop doing that all together and start learning something completely new to you? You would probably have a heart attack, right?

For most anybody, venturing into unknown territory is pretty frightening. Do you remember that first day of kindergarten? My daughter is getting ready for that big day, which happens to be tomorrow, and her anxiety level is off the charts. She can't even sit still. I'm surprised she has been able to fall asleep! But, see that's the thing. Even though she knows it's going to be a positive change, she's still anxious, and if given the chance, she would probably consider not going at all. We all have similar reactions to leaving the comfortable and the familiar to enter into unchartered territories.

For internet marketers, however, the stakes are much higher. Robert Kiyosaki refers to the fact that in business it is important to FOCUS (Follow One Course Until Successful). The problem is that most marketers ignore the important preposition "UNTIL" in that statement and want to just stick to what they know on a permanent basis.

Obviously, you do not want to just abandon strategies that work for you and that you have spent priceless time and energy to master. But, Do NOT settle for just one strategy for the duration of your marketing career. While at first it IS wise to just pick one or two things to focus on.

When IS a good time to integrate new strategies? Here's a short list, by no means comprehensive, of moments in which it is not only acceptable, but down-right advisable to incorporate new marketing strategies:

Your old strategy has considerably reduced its performance (has stopped converting). Your tools or service providers have ceased operations or changed the rules on you (i.e. "Google Slap"). You have added new products or services to your income streams and wish to promote more aggressively. You have found and added to your portfolio a product or service which pays you a really high commission which merits a more multi-faceted approach to marketing

There is a time for everything, including a time to diversify your marketing strategy. My one suggestion would be to not abandon completely what you have already mastered. If you are creative, you can probably even find ways to combine old and new techniques into one massively strategic campaign that brings you unprecedented results. Have fun learning new things and go for it!
