Signs Your Child Could Have ADHD by Elizabeth Sultan

Children of all ages start showing signs of ADHD over time. It may first start with hyperactivity and impulsiveness and a few months later also turn into inattention. The problem is, many normal children often will have such symptoms, but at a lesser volume or a different disorder could be the cause. This is when having the child evaluated by a professional is ideal for getting the best results as to why the child is acting the way he or she is.

Hyperactivity is one of three signs a child may have ADHD. A child that has hyperactivity is one who is always "on the go" or has to be moving constantly and cannot stay still for long amounts of time. Staying in their seat in class, and eating a dinner with family is often times a challenge since they feel they need to walk around. Wiggling and squirming is usually what happens when they are forced to stay in one spot. Touching items and even taping on their desk also is common.

Signs of hyperactivity to look for include running, climbing, and even getting up from their chair at school when it is expected to stay seated and quiet. The feeling of restlessness is also a sign of hyperactivity which may be caused by ADHD.

Impulsiveness is the second sign of a child having the disorder. Without even thinking, a child will get the urge to blurt out comments or react to a current situation. They often times will show their emotions without thinking of the consequences. The impulsivity makes it difficult for the child to wait his or her turn. This can cause the child to act out in ways such as skipping lines, and aggressively taking a toy away from another child. Children with impulsiveness may even hit or kick when they are upset.

Signs of a child suffering from impulsiveness include not being able to take turns, having a difficult time staying in lines, and not waiting for the teacher to finish their question.

The third sign is inattention. Children whose mind wanders and gets bored quickly when doing one task often times has this sign. When it is something they enjoy, they have no issues on focusing. Homework is often times a struggle not just for the child, but also the parents. If the assignment even gets completed, the work is usually full of errors because of the lack of concentration.

A few signs of inattention in children include not being able to pay attention to details, forgetting items such as books for schoolwork, and being distracted by sights and sounds.

If your child has any of the three signs of ADHD it is worth getting him or her evaluated. This way you will know the cause of your child's behavior and be able to get them the help they deserve.
