In the Night Garden - Who Lives There?

by Keith R Scott

In the Night Garden is a television show for kids aged 1-5 years old with a cast of engaging and lovable characters of all shapes and sizes who live in a magical fantasy woodland world. In the Night Garden has been produced by Andrew Davenport and Anne Wood who are the creative geniuses behind the Teletubbies. The show is filmed in a secret woodland location just outside Stratford-Upon-Avon, and the main characters are shot using live actors, they are not computer generated – the location and live performances give the show a unique warmth and realism that young children can easily relate to.

But who are the wonderfully surreal characters that live there? Let’s find out more about IgglePiggle, Upsy Daisy and Makka Pakka, some of the characters who live together In the Night Garden.

IgglePiggle is cuddly and blue with a shock of red hair. He is always full of energy, bouncing and skipping around. When he gets excited, IgglePiggle often throws himself to the ground, lying spread eagled on his back. He is inquisitive and courageous, but also vulnerable and unassuming and even though he is energetic, he is often in need of comfort and is never without his red blanket, carrying it everywhere with him. At the start and finish of each episode, he travels to and from the Night Garden in a small wooden boat where he uses his red blanket as a sail.

Upsy Daisy is a colourful doll with striped tights and multi-coloured hair. When she gets excited her hair stands on end, her skirt inflates into a tutu and she blows the loveliest kisses. She is a cheerful, upbeat and positive character who loves singing and dancing. She has her own distinctive bed on wheels with a mind of its own that moves around the garden. Upsy Daisy will often be seen chasing or being chased by her bed.

Makka Pakka is small, cuddly and teddy-like. He lives in a little cave where he keeps all his favourite pebbles and stones. He travels around the Night Garden pushing his little tricycle contraption called an Og-Pog. He makes sure that all the stones and pebbles in the Garden are clean and tidy using his little soap and sponge that he carries around on his Og-Pog together with his uff-uff dryer and his special red trumpet. He also cleans the faces of the other characters with his soap and sponge.
