Lady Antebellum are relative up-and-comers in the country music world. That didn't stop them, though, from sprinting to the front of the pack at the recent Academy of Country Music Awards in April. The 2010 Academy of Country Music Awards were held in Las Vegas, and the trio walked away with a staggering five awards. They took home Top Vocal Group of the Year, beating out Little Big Town, the Randy Rogers Band, Rascal Flatts and the Zac Brown Band. They also won two awards each in the Single Record of the Year (for "Need You Now") and Song of the Year (for "Need You Now") categories because they were both the artists and the producers of the hit song.
After the win, multi-instrumentalist Dave Haywood and vocalists Hillary Scott and Charles Kelley were all smiles, and MTV had comments from all of them. Scott spoke specifically about their award-winning song "Need You Now." She said, "You just never know when you write a song and you go into the studio and record it what it's gonna do. And honestly this song took on a new life when we went into the studio." Kelley agreed and marveled at how much this one song has changed the course of their career. The song is also the title track to the trio's second album, which dropped in January 2010.
Lady Antebellum will have another opportunity to rake in the awards at the 2010 CMT Music Awards on June 9 in Nashville. They are up for Video of the Year for "Need You Now" and also garnered two nominations in the Group Video of the Year category for "Need You Now" and "American Honey." The trio's performance of "Lookin' for a Good Time" at the 2009 CMT Music Awards is also nominated for CMT Performance of the Year.
April was a good month for Lady Antebellum, as they had another reason to celebrate on top of their ACM Awards. They took time out from their busy schedule to appear on the April 28th episode of the hit show American Idol, which happened to be Shania Twain Week. They performed their hit "Need You Now." The performance was recorded live a couple of weeks earlier in Los Angeles. Hillary Scott revealed to MTV that she has a connection with Idol: the show rejected her! She explained, "I tried out for the show twice and didn't make it past the first round. So that is what you call validation."
Kelley and Haywood started playing together first before adding Hilary Scott (who is the daughter of country singer Linda Davis). It didn't take the trio long to start gaining momentum, and they soon signed a record deal and released their self-titled debut in 2008. That single yielded top singles like "Love Don't Live Here" and "I Run to You." They followed with 2010's Need You Now, continuing their top-charting ways with the title track and "American Honey."
