Singers should always strive to keep their voices in shape. Your instructor should tutor you on how to sing correctly and safely but there are a few free singing tips that can help keep your voice in shape. Singers should always warm up regularly, even if you do not intend to sing. Simple warm ups should be done before any performances but they can also help to keep your vocal chords in shape.

Water helps to thin mucus and lubricate vocal cords. Try to drink up to 8 or 10 glasses of water every day. This should be pure water and caffeinated beverages do not count towards this. Thick mucus can cause friction to your vocal chords and could end up causing trauma. Smoking is another irritant that can cause swelling to your vocal chords and should be avoided. You may not even smoke yourself but try to be aware of second hand smoke and the damage it can do to your voice.

Try to rest your voice just like you would if you were exercising regularly. Take vocal naps regularly and find some quiet time during your day. Take regular naps if you need.  It may seem like simple common sense but more sleep will keep you in better shape and able to sing with much more enthusiasm.

Use a microphone. Even during practices this can help you to project a loud sound without having strain your voice. You want it in top condition for your next show! Try to use a floor or ear monitor where possible so that you can hear a true version of your sound.

A good singing technique is the ultimate way to perfect your voice. Vocal training in any style will not alter you own but it can greatly improve your technique and most importantly allow you to sing safely! Try to develop a strong speaking voice as well as your singing voice. Faults in your spoken voice can carry through to your singing as you speak most of the time.

The most important tip to remember is to listen to your voice. Just as athletes are aware of their body you should be aware of your voice. You will be the first to know if anything is wrong. If your voice begins to hurt allow it time to rest and don't strain it any further. Follow these simple free singing tips and your voice will stay in the best condition it can possibly be!
