The great non-Equity touring production of "Beauty and the Beast" encamped this week at Starlight Theatre boasts numerous interesting performances and fruitfully pronounces the show's inherent humor and pathos. This is not a mainly high-tech affair actors, not computers, move the scenery around, there were moments on Tuesday night when it has found wishing for more opulence than this company can deliver. The 8 p.m. curtain negated the visual effects early in Act 1 and reminds everyone that (a) it's hard to see throughout a gauze curtain without benefit of perceptible backlighting, (b) audiences should never really have to look at scenery without the improvement of stage lights.
