The moment was an emotional one for the characters of Stephanie and Max on NBC's Days of Our Lives - Max was professing his love to Stephanie for the first time in their relationship. To set the perfect romantic mood for this important memory, he got a bottle of wine and turned on the jukebox. The perfect song began filling the air, one that encapsulated the beauty and intensity of the moment as no other song really could. The song was, "Right Here," by Days of Our Lives resident songwriter Jd Webb.
Together with the show's music supervisor D. Brent Nelson, Webb composes the lion's share of the original music for the daytime drama, and sings most of the male vocals, as well. "Brent will call me and be, like, OK - we have a scene coming up where this happens, it needs to have this feeling. Or sometimes we'll be going for a certain style. But either way, we really try to write varied songs to set the mood and feeling of the show, but which are still strong pieces that stand on their own as songs."
It would be hard to argue that Webb has been anything but successful in this endeavor. As the songs have gained popularity in the show, emails have flooded in to both his Myspace page and to the Days of Our Lives website, from people wondering how they can purchase the songs for their personal collections.
"What's really cool is when one of the songs becomes the theme songs for one of the couples, it's like 'their' song," says Webb, "Then, it's like, it plays every time they have a significant scene or when they're kissing, and it really becomes entwined in peoples' minds with the story of those two characters."
Well, one thing is certain - by lending his talents to Daytime television, Jd has allowed his music to become part of more than just the soundtrack of Days of Our Lives, it has also become part of the soundtrack of peoples' lives.
