The Akshaya Patra Foundation's Annual Report for 2008-09 has received the "Certificate of Merit" awarded by the South Asian Federation of Accountants (SAFA) for the year 2009 in the category of Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs). The Award ceremony will be held on 12th December, during the first valedictory session of first SAFA summit in Kathmandu, Nepal. This will be inaugurated by the Prime Minister of Nepal, Madhav Kumar Nepal.
The awards under different categories are conferred on the basis of evaluation by SAFA's Committee for Improvement in Transparency, Accountability and Governance of the published Annual reports of entries from South Asian countries. In the face of tough competition from other countries, reviewers representing South Asian countries chose Akshaya Patra for this award.
The awards are unique in that they are the only Asia specific awards to recognize the transparent financial accounting practices of NGOs. The SAFA award is the latest in a string of awards received by Akshaya Patra since its formation over 10 years ago.
