Treating an obsessive compulsive disorder can be emotionally exhausting both for the person suffering from the disorder and family members. If you are suffering from this disorder and have tried medication without successful treatment of your behavior then it might be time to start looking again. The process of finding effective medication for OCD will take time. While it can be very frustrating to keep trying medications that do not work it is a necessary part of treatment.
How Drugs Can Help
A person suffering from obsessive compulsive disorder will often suffer from depression at the same time. Some of the effective medications for OCD are antidepressants used to treat depression in patients who do not have obsessive compulsive disorder. These same drugs not only help to treat depression but can also help with treatment of obsessive compulsive disorder.
What Is Used
One of the most commonly used drugs in treatment of OCD disorder is Anafranil. At the moment Anafranil is the drug that has been studied the most in relation to the treatment of obsessive compulsive disorder. Other drugs that are also used to treat obsessive compulsive disorder are Paxil, Zoloft, Celexa, Prozac, and Luvox.
These are the most common drugs that are thought to be very effective medications for OCD. However your doctor may prescribe you something else. Don’t worry if these familiar names are not what your doctor has in mind. There are other drugs out there that are effective medications for OCD. There are new drugs being testes all the time but these are the most widely tested at the moment in patients who have obsessive compulsive disorder.
Waiting It Out
Many people have unrealistic expectations about medication when used in treatment for obsessive compulsive disorder. You should be on the medication you have been prescribed for at least 10 to 12 weeks. It is very possible that you will only experience side effects in the first few weeks on your medication without improvement in your obsessive compulsive disorder.
Most patients who continue treatment report a vast improvement in behavior after the first month. Understand that you may have to try more than one medication when you are trying to find effective medication for OCD. You must give each medication time to show results before switching to a new type of medication. Your doctor may also want to try to combine different drugs together. Another important aspect of treatment is ongoing therapy as well as medication.
