The Causes of OCD

posted in Health and Fitness : OCD

Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is an incredibly serious anxiety disorder. If you have this condition, then you know how debilitating it can be. OCD revolves around obsessive thoughts and compulsive actions that the individual can not stop. If a person tries not to do a behavior or action, he or she will end up feeling scared, anxious, depressed, and upset. The more serious OCD becomes, the more likely it is that everything from work to friendships to school will be affected. Folks with the condition often experience depression and isolation. This is why seeking OCD help is so important. With a little time and energy, it is possible to beat OCD with the help of a professional. It can help the professional and the individual if he or she understands the causes of OCD. Having this knowledge makes it that much easier for the professional to select a treatment plan or approach and for the individual to process and understand their condition. The following are some of the more common causes of OCD.

Physiological Issues

One of the chief causes of OCD is an issue with one's chemical or hormone levels or for brain abnormalities. Researchers believe that imbalances of serotonin, a neurotransmitter, may even be linked to the condition. Thus, because there is too much serotonin in a person's body, he or she can not deal with their fear or anxieties. Knowing this cause of OCD can help a person because it shows him or her that it is not their fault and that medication, therapy, and work are needed to overcome this chemical imbalance.

Similarly, another common cause of OCD is something equally close to home: genetics. If you have someone in your family who has this condition, it is likely that you will have some form of it. This is one condition that definitely is passed down through different generations. This is why you should keep an eye out for the symptoms or signs of OCD: if you do not deal with the situation early on, it can only worsen, especially if it runs in your family.

Depression

Recent research says that a cause of OCD is depression. When a person develops severe depression, OCD may be a way the body handles such a situation. Instead of dealing with one's issues, they focus on their obsessions and rituals. Additionally, the aforementioned issues with serotonin are just as linked to depression as they are to OCD. The two disorders definitely go hand in hand.
