How Common is OCD Mental Disorder

by linkroll

posted in Health and Fitness : OCD

OCD mental disorder has not always been commonly recognized. Previously it was thought to be a very rare condition. However, recently people have changed the way they look at mental disorders and found that OCD mental disorder is actually quite commonplace. Any sort of mental or emotional disorder is often still seen as a shortcoming or a weakness by society. And because of that people and sufferers are reluctant to speak out about what they are going through.

Are you really going to come out about your OCD mental disorder if you know that you are going to be ridiculed for it? Probably not easily. What makes society so sided against accepting the disorders that plague its members is mostly ignorance. Nobody really knows much about problems such as OCD mental disorder because it does not affect them personally.

To top that off most people are unwilling to find out about something they do not want to know about. This leaves OCD mental disorder sufferers in a spot between a rock and a hard place.

More Commonplace Than You Think

If you or a loved one is suffering from OCD mental disorder or an OCD related disorder, do not despair. OCD mental disorder is common enough that an estimated 2% - 3% of the entire world population has it. This makes it relatively common in a society that is surprisingly ignorant about it. OCD mental disorder does not create a monster out of the sufferer and it is by far not contagious. What these people need is to be embraced by society and helped. Self help is a huge part of dealing with any mental or emotional disorder but without actively helping hands it can be an uphill battle.

OCD mental disorder is common enough that society should embrace it and accept it rather than shun it. By being ignorant about OCD mental disorder we are making life unbearable for sufferers. People with OCD are often ashamed of their disorder because they fear that others will condemn them as being mad. OCD is an active part of their lives, something they often cannot control entirely. If you know someone with OCD, take some time to try and walk in their shoes for a day.

Maybe that will be an eye-opener enough to start helping people around you with this common mental disorder. OCD mental disorder is here to stay and you can make a difference in society, your own life and the life of someone else by learning.
