Quick Tips for Getting Organized - Volume 1 by Kim Freeman

Health & Beauty
Set a beauty routine – A routine can help in almost any area of life but most of us don’t think about letting it help us look better! One idea is to bathe at night after the kids are in bed. That way you can shave, wash and blow dry your hair in a relaxed (not rushed!) state. Make it a nightly ritual to help you relax after a full day.

Memory Keeping
For those of you with digital cameras, buy a memory card that isn't too large. One that holds around 50 pictures is usually large enough for an event, but not so large that it would be months before you empty it. A smaller memory card will help force you to download pictures from your camera to your computer more frequently and less pictures means easier organizing when you do!

Home Keeping
When cleaning start with what you consider the "hardest" chore just to give you the mental edge of accomplishing the task. The rest of your chores will be down-hill from there.
Designate certain days of the week for certain chores. For example: groceries on Monday; laundry on Tuesday; dust and vacuum on Wednesday. This will allow you to focus on one chore at a time without getting overwhelmed by a day of chores and everything that needs to get done.

Closet Maintenance
Almost everyone I know has a love/hate relationship with their closet, and deciding what to get rid of is like playing a guessing game. Will I ever wear this again? Will I need this someday? One trick to help you see what you really wear is to turn all your clothes hangers around. As you wear each item hang it up correctly. In a few months you will see exactly what you love to wear and what you can live without. Donate the unused clothes to a local charity or friend in need and you'll really feel good about opening up your closet.

Mail
This is a problem everyone has to learn to deal with. We all get mail. The trick is to address it on a daily basis. Sort it according to family members or categories and make decisions immediately about what you will and won't spend time reading. If you get publications and they are piling up on you, consider discontinuing the service or tearing out the articles you intend on reading. Read within the week or toss it! Keep and read only what's important or interests you and LET THE REST GO!

Time Management
Time management is a constant challenge for most people. One small aid to help you stay focused and on task is a kitchen timer. There are many ways to use it. I'll give you two. Firstly, use it as an incentive to clean a room. Rather than lolly gag around a chore or take too long completing it, give yourself a set amount of time and work without watching the clock. Secondly, use the timer to limit an otherwise long phone conversation or TV show when you don’t really have time to spare. Don’t let the phone or TV enable you in avoiding what you need to do. Set the timer and when it goes off, wrap up the conversation or turn off the TV. If you want to, tell the friend that you will call them back when you have more time to talk.

Schedules
Keeping a family calendar in a central location where everyone can keep track of each others schedules is helpful to maintain unity as a family. Just be sure to use what works for your and yours. If you don't use a computer regularly, don't buy a program to solve this. Rather, stick to a good ol' write-on calendar. However, if you do use a computer regularly then there are some great calendars with lots of bonus features (address books and task lists) that would be worth the investment.

Family
In our society we are constantly going. It's important to take a night off and spend it with your family not only to nurture the relationships within your home, but also as an example to you children that stopping our lives for just a moment is healthy. For better or worse, we are our children's biggest influence. In no small part, they become the people we teach them to be.

"Your family and your love must be cultivated like a garden. Time, effort, and imagination must be summoned constantly to keep it flourishing and growing" – Jim Rohn
