Pay per click advertising is probably the quickest way to get targeted traffic to your site. Plug in a list of keywords, write a three line ad, set your daily budget and let it fly. If you can get a listing towards the top of page one, you can get hundreds of visitors to your site daily. However, you can also go broke. I'm going to share a couple of pay per click horror stories in the hope that they can prevent you from making these terrible mistakes.
A friend of mine had his product all ready to go and was determined to use pay per click advertising to promote it. The product was great. I myself checked it out and I felt that there was no way it could not sell. So I gave him the green light when he asked me what he thought. So he set everything up. He set his daily budget, got his list of keywords, wrote a couple of ads to split test against each other and let his campaign go live.
That month, he ended up with a bill of over $1,000 and all of 2 sales made. He was losing a fortune. Well, upon careful examination of his campaign (he assured me he knew what he was doing) he made two critical mistakes. The first was that he didn't restrict his ads to just English speaking countries. He had them going all over the world to places that couldn't possibly be interested in this product. The other mistake was that he ran his ads on content sites where the CTR is notoriously high and conversions horribly low. The combination killed his budget in one month.
The second horror story won't take as long to go over. A friend of mine set his campaign to run and forgot to set his cost per click to a max amount and set his daily budget to some astronomical figure. I won't even go into how much money he lost his first month. It was a nightmare.
Pay per click advertising can be extremely effective, but you MUST know what you're doing. Below is a resource that will help with pay per click and many other forms of promotion.

What Is PPC? - by
Tsuyoshi E. SuzukiPPC or Pay Per Click is a great tool for advertisers and web based businesses, but using it properly is extremely important. It is essentially a method of advertising your website on search engine results (in the sponsored result listing) where advertisers bid against each other to be the top search result on particular keywords or keyword phrases. Pay Per Click is better than other types of advertising because the consumer is actively seeking a product or service when he/she types a keyword in a search engine.
