Is International Adoption Just a Fad?

by Wade Robins

We live in a day and age where everything is "now" oriented. Fast food satisfies the "now" of eating. If you need to make a phone call, no more public pay phones or waiting until you get home - that's what cell phones are for. Laptop computers put the web a t your fingertips, virtually anywhere, literally. Want a new baby? Buy one from another country. Numerous celebrities and wealthy people have given the impression of having done exactly that. Are they merely influencing another fad or are they sincere? Celebrities are notorious for their "platforms" of self-interest. Campaigning against fur one month and boycotting political parties the next. Is this the next level of fashion statements?

It is necessary at this point to acknowledge that there are two opposing views concerning adoption. The first being the human right of children everywhere to have a family and be surrounded by people that love and care for them, which unfortunately is not the case for the greater percentage of children worldwide. The contradiction to this is the belief by a vast majority of people, is that money fixes everything, which is of course untrue.

Quite frequently, in the aftermath of devastating hurricanes, earthquakes, and other disasters, many people feel an overwhelming need to help. They sometimes see the pain and suffering around them and they try to help heal. In and of itself, this is a wonderful advantage for the emergency assistance agencies such as the Red Cross. However, sometimes the most effective way to assist the children, whether victims of natural disasters or otherwise, is by financial support.

Experts have agreed that at times adoption is not the best way to assist these children. While understanding that many, if not all of the children have been through a severely traumatic experience, they feel it would result in more adverse effects on the children to be removed from familiar surroundings and re-located to a strange, new country. It is best stated in the words of a spokesperson for an American adoption agency, Childrens Hope International, "The last thing they need to do is be rushed away to some foriegn land...We have to think of the child first."

Is this the latest dilemma we face today? Are the wealthy people and perhaps even the celebrities searching for short-term satisfaction? Is it an over-whelming desire to help, or is it a need to feel needed? Is it truly in the best interests of the children? Are they benefiting from these international adoptions?
