Make Your Fire Engine Party Theme Real

by Gail Leino

Anyone that knows a volunteer firefighter can attest to the fact that all things that involve a fire engine fascinate children. Since you already have a party going, why not turn it into an educational experience as well? This is especially important for the younger children who may not know what to do in case of a fire.

One thing you can do is use a large cardboard box and help the children decorate and color it so it looks like a house. The box must be big enough so that the children can crawl into it. Since the children are going to pretend they are leaving a burning building, have them draw flames on the outside of their house. You might also have some older children draw a depiction of the "Stop, Drop, and Roll" method of survival when a person catches on fire. Make the box big enough that they COULD stand in it, so that they will learn how to crawl from a building on fire, with a towel, sheet, or other clothing type covering their mouths as they exit. You can place the pictures outside the "building" so that children can immediately begin their "stop, drop, and roll" or you can have them do another run through the house.

Don't think because this is a learning process the children will not enjoy it. When they are very young, they actually find it fun to crawl in and out of a box, so they will have fun and learn fire evacuation methods at the same time. It's makeshift compared to what fire companies do for fire prevention week, but the message still comes through. If your child has a fire truck that makes noise, it makes it more authentic.
