Biting can be a particularly hard problem to deal with in your dog for many reasons. Not only can it be frightening, but it can also be dangerous as well. If your dog is experiencing problems with biting, it is imperative that you understand the causes behind it and learn how to effectively put a stop to it.

Background of Dog Biting
One of the most important things to understand is that biting is perfectly natural for dogs. Young puppies learn to explore the world around them with their mouths. They often nip at one another in play. Therefore, it is only natural for this behavior to carry-over into other areas of their lives as well. This is crucial to understand. To prevent biting behavior from beginning, you must teach your pup what is acceptable and what is not acceptable. If you allow your puppy to nip at your fingers when he is young, he will have a hard time understanding why it is suddenly not okay when he is older.

What Causes Biting?

In some cases, biting is not related to the dog's desire to explore his environment, but could be associated with aggression. To determine whether your dog's biting is related to aggression or something else, you need to consider the dog's entire demeanor and behavior. If his body is stiff, his ears are laid flat against his head and his tail is raised, this is a sure sign that the dog is upset about something.

When aggression is the case, you must try to determine what is causing the dog to behave aggressively. There could be many different reasons that can lead to this type of behavior in a dog. Biting can be caused by the dog feeling that he needs to defend his territory or even himself or a family member. Consider what is going on at the particular time when the behavior occurs and this may give you a good idea as to what is causing the behavior so that you can begin to correct it.

Resolving Aggression

There are actually many things that can be done to put a stop to biting behavior. Obedience training is essential in correcting any type of undesirable behavior. Not only must your dog know what is acceptable and unacceptable, but he must also recognize you as the Alpha. He must understand that he is to defer to you. Obedience training can help with this. The Complete D.I.Y Dog Training Package is also an excellent guide that can give you some guidance in obedience training and how to stop problem behavior such as biting.
