Dealing with your Dog's Jumping

Tired of your dog jumping up on your guests when they walk in the door? Are you becoming aggravated by the way your dog greets you when you come home? Jumping is a fairly common behavior in many dogs and can even be more common in some dog breeds than others. Even so, it can also be aggravating. When your dog jumps up on people who are not familiar with your dog, it may also frighten them. This means it is essential that you take control of your dog's jumping and put a stop to him jumping up on people.

Why Dogs Jump
One thing to understand when addressing this behavior is that jumping really is quite a natural behavior. If you have ever observed puppies at play with one another and as they interact with their mother, you will probably notice that they jump frequently. In fact, most puppies jump up to greet their mothers before they are weaned. Therefore, jumping is perfectly natural and even instinctive in the dog's mind and he will not know he is doing something wrong until you show him that is unacceptable.

Addressing Jumping
Keep in mind that it is never a good idea to shove a dog when he jumps up on you. You could very easily hurt the dog, especially his legs or spine. This could incur damage that cannot be reversed and is permanent. That is certainly not what you want to accomplish. You should also not hit your dog when trying to put a stop to jumping. Punishment is never a good method to use when you are trying to break a particular behavior, especially one that is largely instinctive.

Jumping is a behavior that can often be addressed through obedience training. Obedience training can help to set a foundation that will allow you to help your dog resolve many undesirable behaviors, including jumping. If you have not already done so, getting your dog started in obedience training is an essential. Dogs are typically only as well behaved as you show them how to be. As a responsible dog owner, it is your job to show your dog what you expect of them. Obedience training can help you to accomplish that. The Complete D.I.Y. Dog Training Package has been used by many dog owners to guide their dogs through the process of becoming better behaved and ending problems such as jumping.
