Growling is a fairly common problem that many dog owners experience. There can be many reasons why your dog grows, but whatever the reason it can be disconcerting. This is especially true when your dog growls around young children and even adults that do not know him well. In many instances growling can be associated with aggression, so it is always important to take it seriously as it could be an indication that your dog may bite.

Resolving Growling Issues
You need to pay attention to the times when your dog seems to growl most often. Does it seem as though he is growling during meal times? Does he only grow at other animals or does he growl at people as well? Is there any one thing that seems to trigger his growling? As with many behavior problems, keeping a journal and noting the times when this behavior is displayed can help you to narrow down the possible causes for your dog's growling so that you can properly address and ultimately resolve it. Remember, this is not a behavior that you want to ignore. If you do, it can sometimes lead to much more serious behavior. It is always better to address the problem as quickly as possible rather than hoping it will simply go away on its own.

Setting the Foundation
Obedience training can help to lay a solid foundation that will help to deter and resolve many unwanted behaviors, including growling. In some cases, growling can be related to a simple warning or alert; similar to barking. If your dog is growling frequently along with barring his teeth this is an indication that there is a much more serious problem at hand. Your dog must understand his role with his 'pack', which means that he must understand you are the leader, not him.

Enrolling your dog in obedience training or starting an obedience program at home is a good way to establish your dog's role in his mind as well as deepen the bond between the two of you. There are actually many simple training techniques you can use at home to quickly resolve this problem. Secrets to Dog Training is a thorough resource that can walk you through those steps so that you will be able to put an end to your dog's growling problems within a short period of time.
