Understanding the basics to changing the water in your fish tanks is essential for the health of your fish. One of the biggest mistakes that many fish owners make is changing all of the water in the tank. This act can be devastating to your fish, as a certain level of bacteria is very important. Dilution is the key to a healthy environment for your fish. Follow the steps below for proper cleaning.
1. First fill a large container up with tap water from your sink, which will be used to replace some of the water in your tank. In general, you will want to replace around 20 to 25 percent of your fish tank water for each cleaning, so if you have a 20 gallon tank, you will need a 4-5 gallon bucket of water for the replacement.
2. Once you’ve filled our bucket, add water conditioner to the bucket. Follow the directions of the water conditioner.
3. Now put the bucket and tubing near your fish tank to prepare for the water change. You should turn off all electricity and potential hazards, such as heaters and filters.
4. Now place one end of the tube into the tank and begin siphoning out some of the water into a second 4-5 gallon bucket.
5. Then remove any noticeable waste and debris from the tank by moving the tube around the gravel of the tank.
6. Once you’ve filled the second bucket, cease siphoning and add the bucket of conditioned water to the tank.
7. Turn all electrical equipment such as a heater or filter back on and you’re finished.
