Learning how to train a puppy not to bite or nip is an important exercise to master early on In your puppies development. Every puppy likes to nip or bite or mouth when he or she is playing with you and there is absolutely no malice in it, it is simply a natural instinct and how he or she would play with his or her litter mates.
This is one of the reasons it is important for your puppy to remain with his mother and his litter mates until he reaches at least 8 weeks old. It is in these 8 weeks that he begins his socialisation and in playing with his litter mates he learns the basics of what is called his bite inhibition.
When puppies play they nip and bite each other but if the bite is too hard they will squeal and stop playing. This is how they determine how hard they can bite without hurting each other. When we adopt a puppy it is important that we continue to develop their bite inhibition. As any new puppy owner will undoubtedly know from experiencing play biting, humans get hurt a lot easier than dogs do.
There are several things you can do to discourage your puppy from nipping and biting. Since mouthing is a natural behaviour it should not be considered as dog behavioral problems but something which you must nip in the bud when they are young.
By letting out a squeal when your puppy nips you or immediately stopping play you are telling him that this behaviour is unacceptable.
Learning how to train a puppy not to bite can be a patience testing experience but after a few weeks of using the correct methods you will wonder what all the fuss was about.
