How to Get Aquarium Wood to Sink in Water

Natural aquarium wood can do a lot to make the appearance of your aquarium come alive. There are many benefits to natural wood including habitat and and wood can support bacteria that are beneficial to aquatic environments. The problem is that most wood floats in water. But with some patience you can get most wood to sink.

The quickest way to get wood to sink is to weigh it. You can lodge it between rocks or attach metal or slate to get it to sink. But many types of wood will sink by itself if you allow it to become saturated with water. In order to do this, the pores in the wood must absorb water and displace the air inside. This has to happen deep into the core of the wood. For many types of wood this is easy to do by simply submerging the wood for a while, it just takes time.

Depending on the size and type of wood, this can take a couple weeks to several months. You can either pre-soak the wood to get it to sink, or just put it in your aquarium and weigh it down with something until it is no longer buoyant. Pre-soaking also has the advantage of giving the wood time to release its tannin. Just use caution when weighing buoyant wood down to make sure it will not break free and injure a fish or break something.

One of the reasons manzanita wood is so popular for aquariums is it is already dense and will sink nicely after soaking for a while. It is also naturally low in tannin. You can find natural manzanita branches at some pet supply stores and also buy manzanita branches online.
