Kangri-an expensive source in Kashmir

Srinagar: As temperature continues to decrease in the valley by every passing day, the sales of Kangri-a local parlance for an earthen pot encased in wicker- have picked up over last few days.

Kashmiris use Kangri-an expensive source- to keep themselves warm during late autumn and winter seasons.

The sales have shown a considerable increase throughout the valley, more so in rural Kashmir.

"As cold wave is sweeping the valley for quite a while now, people here are buying Kangris in good numbers. Our sales are going up by the day. Alhamdulillah we are doing a good business," said a Kangri seller at Batamaloo adding that the sales are expected to go up as there seems no signs of temperature going up.

Srinagar experienced its coldest night of the season recording temperature as low as minus 3.4 degree Celsius while in tourist resorts Pahalgam and Gulmarg mercury dipped down to minus 4.7 and minus 4.4 respectively.

It is the rural Kashmir where Kangri is used the most.

Ali Mohammad, associated with Kangri business in a South Kashmir's Tral village told Agence India Press that he is selling 50 to 70 Kangris a day and expects to touch the 100 mark soon.

"If you see all the villagers cannot afford electric heaters, so they still rely on Kangris to keep themselves warm. The sales in villages are more than that in the towns and cities," he said adding that Kangri was an inexpensive source to keep people warm during the chilly winters.

The mobile nature of the Kangri, he said, was a big reason that Kangri was still in vogue in villages.

"Kangri is sort of a mobile heater.  Villages can go to their fields with having Kangri inside the pheran (a Kashmir cloak) in winters.

With weathermen forecasting that mercury is going to dip further down in coming days, people associated with the Kangri business will have a busy but profitable days ahead. (AIP)
