Selecting an Adoption Agency

by Holly Matheson

Searching for an adoption agency can be compared to shopping for a new car. While adoption is obviously a much more serious commitment, most people would not buy just any car without doing thorough research and comparison shopping; the same should go with adoption agencies. Take the necessary time to research and network to guarantee that the agency you select will attend to all your needs as you set out on your adoption journey.

Think Like a Consumer - Just as it was mentioned before, keep the mindset of a consumer when you begin looking for an adoption agency. Collect as much information about each center as possible, as well as state adoption regulations. You should explore all your options and see what programs and agencies are adept for you situation. Ideally, you should spend anywhere from two to four months researching different agencies and alternatives available.

Know What Questions to Ask - Having done your research before you meet with any potential adoption agencies, you should be prepared to ask numerous questions, such as what support services or training does the agency provide? Adoptive Families (the industry's leading magazine) has an adoption guide full of questions that adoptive parents should inquire about during the search for the perfect adoption agency.

Fees and Expenses - Make sure that you know (and understand) what fees you will be charged and when they are payable. Keep in mind that you are paying for the agency's services, which does not guarantee that a child will be placed with you. You should be apprehensive if an adoption agency requires all fees and costs to be paid up front; doing so is considered to be an unethical practice.
