Make Your Own High Fiber Cereal That The Kids Will Love

Everybody knows that the American diet doesn't have enough fiber in it and that can lead to all kinds of serious health problems.  But trying to find food that is high in fiber, tastes good, and is quick and easy to make is a really tough task.  Well what follows is a guide to turning that bland tasteless high fiber cereal that you hate into a morning miracle of taste.  Trust me.  This is a great way to solve your fiber shortage problem.

Go to the store and buy two different brands of high fiber cereal.  Make sure they offer at least 9 grams of fiber per serving.  Next buy two brands of your favorite cereal.  Try to shy away from the ones with the mega doses of sugar but if you just gotta have your chocolate flavored, sugar encrusted particle of almost synthetic wheat, then go right ahead.  Live dangerously.

Here's the fun part.  Buy a can of nuts.  They can be your favorite kind of nuts but almonds and cashews are the best for this purpose.  Then buy a box of raisons.  Optionally you can pick up enough bananas to last you a week or grab some dates.

When you get home you are going to need a large, plastic container with a lid that will seal tightly to store your magic mix of fiber food.  Take equal portions from the four boxes of cereal and add them to the container.  Pour in some nuts and raisons and shake the whole mixture well.

What you'll wind up with is a bowl of cereal where the cereal itself will provide about 6 grams of fiber and the nuts and raisons will provide 3 grams or more.  If you add bananas or dates or both you'll be pushing upwards to 11 grams of dietary fiber daily.

Now this might sound like an extreme or goofy idea but give it a chance.  By adding flavor to the normally flavorless fiber cereal you have created or more palatable food.  In your next batch you can go heavier on the "normal" cereal if you also go heavier on the nuts and raisons.  It's just a balance game to get the fiber you need.

So there you have it.  A morning meal that is full of variety, flavor and a ton of high fiber.  If you want to fake out the kids, take one of the favorite cereal boxes and fill it up with your new mix.  Just tell them it was on sale because the cereal factory made a mistake.
