Book clubs are a great way to get friends and families together and catch up on reading. Whether you are into non-fiction, romance, how-to’s or fantasy; a book club can quench your thirst for reading. However, when you gather everyone together for that weekly or monthly book club party, you may find that the guests are in need of something a little more substantial than tomes and poems. That’s where this handy book club menu comes in.
Books pair well with so many foods and drinks. Many readers like to curl up on a warm sofa with a glass of robust, red wine. Others prefer a nice cup of Earl Grey tea or rich coffee in a wing chair. Pair these beverages with classics, such as lady finger cookies, orange scones and crumb cake.
To make a scrumptious crumb cake for your book club party, start by creaming ½ cup butter and 1 cup sugar together. Add 1 egg and continue to beat. Stir in 2 tablespoons light molasses. Mix 2 cups flour, ½ teaspoon salt, ½ teaspoon ground cloves, ½ teaspoon nutmeg and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Dissolve 1 teaspoon baking soda in 1 cup buttermilk. Add dry ingredients to this liquid. Pour mixture into a greased 9-inch square pan. To make crumb topping, blend 3 tablespoons flour, 3 tablespoons brown sugar, 2 ½ tablespoons butter, 1/8 teaspoon salt and 2 tablespoons chopped pecans. Sprinkle crumb topping on cake batter and bake for 30 to 35 minutes in a 350 degree Fahrenheit oven.
Whether it’s the dead of winter or heat of summer, this classic menu will keep everyone in your book club eager to see what’s next.
