Kids Know How To Party Hearty

by Gail Leino

Every time you turn around it seems like kids are having parties. While it is a birthday party, a sleepover, swim party or a campout, kids today know how to live it up. This causes for competition between parents to have a better party than the last.

One thing that doesn’t go out of style is food at these parties for kids. There may be a moon bounce, or pony rides but ultimately there should be time to eat at the parties. But what to serve?

Kids enjoy being messy, so why not allow that to occur by serving messy food? Try sloppy joes for an added glop of food right on the front of the shirt. Cupcakes with green icing also leave plenty of stains behind. And who could forget the red kool-aid stains that are tough to get out of a lightly colored counter top.

Making sloppy joes for kids is quite simple. The ingredients are basic: 1 pound lean ground beef or ground turkey, 1/4 cup chopped onion, 1/4 cup chopped green bell pepper, 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon prepared yellow mustard, 3/4 cup ketchup, 3 teaspoons brown sugar, salt to taste, and ground black pepper to taste. Next, in a medium skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef, onion, and green pepper; drain off liquids. Finally stir in the garlic powder, mustard, ketchup, and brown sugar; mix thoroughly. Reduce heat, and simmer for 30 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

At the next kids party you attend be on the lookout for messy food. A word to the wise…don’t wear a white shirt.
