Anyone that wants to improve their skills in a sport should consider working on their jumping power. This can be especially important in sports such as basketball, football and volleyball. One of the key things about being able to jump high is having powerful leg muscles. You do not want the leg muscles to be bulky, but they need to have long and lean muscle especially in the calf area. An exercise that works very well to develop the appropriate muscles is doing squats.
Work on weights for leg muscles just once or twice a week, but no more. Stretching and flexibility exercises should also be done to ensure that muscle mass developed is lean as the muscles need to have spring as well as strength.
Making short sprints part of your regular training sessions is an important way to get your leg muscles used to calling upon strength for short bursts of time. To double your vertical leap you need to have lots of fast twitch muscle fibers on demand. Using jump rope is a good way to get the body into shape and gently strengthen the leg muscles.
Plyometric exercises are very useful drills to make a part of your routine. Many personal trainers use them very successfully with regular clients as well as pro athletes in order to heighten their jumping abilities. You can either get access to a plyometrics program through a personal trainer or by purchasing a program from the Internet.
If you really want to double your vertical leap, then you should combine stretching and non weights based strengthening exercises with occasional weights. Using plyometric drills should also be a key part of your program. Use these persistently and you will have no problems seeing incredible improvements in your jumping within a couple of months.
