Ghana: Some Who Sacrificed -
by
John Powell
At the dawn of the twenty-first century, Ghana entered upon a new era of democracy and economic progress. After forty-three years of independence, the infant state had at last thrown off the shackles of one party government and military rule; and the discovery of off-shore oil reserves provided an opportunity to advance to middle-income status and beyond. Forty-three years is a long time to wait for the benefits of freedom, and many of the young hopefuls who welcomed the birth of a new country on 6 March 1957 did not survive to see the realisation of their dreams. Others, born into the new Ghana, were faced with decades of turmoil and deprivation and spent more than half a life-time struggling to find a way forward for themselves, their families and their country....
ALMA Sees The Construction Secrets Of Primordial Galaxies -
by
Judith E Braffman-Miller
The starlit galaxies of our Cosmos caught fire a very long time ago, and began to light up that featureless stretch of fantastic darkness less than a billion years after its Big Bang birth almost 14 billion years ago. When the first galaxies began to form only a few hundred million years after the Big Bang, our ancient Cosmos was filled with a strange and mysterious mist of pristine hydrogen gas--but when the first luminous sources formed, their flowing and fabulous light cleared away that ancient veil of mist and made the Universe transparent to ultraviolet light. Astronomers term this very ancient time the epoch of "reionization", but very little is known about the first galaxies, and until now they have only been observed as dim blobs. However, in July 2015, astronomers announced that their new observations using the power of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) has started to change all that--and for the very first time they have been able to observe the first galaxies as much more than mere faint blobs bobbing around the Universe, very long ago--and far, far away....
Interstellar Travel: How To Solve The - MAIN - Problem: Interstellar Travel Is Possible -
by
Jessie R Johnson
The MAIN problem in interstellar travel is trying to use: TOO MUCH MASS. Only small amounts of mass on the order of 2-20 milligrams can be used and accelerated up to 25,000 miles per second (the required speed) to reach all star systems 4.3-15 light years distance from Earth. Using 1.6 kilowatts net or 3 horse power (2238 watts) gross to accelerate 2 milligrams up to 25,000 miles/sec in the isolation of space....
Two Ways To Get Students Engaged in the Math Classroom -
by
Scott A McKinney
A big challenge in teaching math effectively is keeping students engaged. Many students find the material boring, or perhaps consider it something only "geniuses" are able to understand. To overcome this, math teachers can engage students by introducing problem solving or reasoning material in their classes. This helps make it fun and interesting for students, and also equips them with logical skills that will help them in the future....
A Tip For Math Teachers: How to Use Socratic Questioning to Develop Student Reasoning Skills -
by
Scott A McKinney
If you are a math teacher who is trying to get your students engaged in your classes, consider using Socratic questioning as part of your daily activities. This style of instruction focuses on asking students directed questions to help them interact with and reason about the course material. Doing this in my own classes has helped improve student engagement and interest, raised test scores, and ultimately equipped students with reasoning and logic skills that will help them no matter what course they choose in life....

Ignoring Your Phone Will Distract You -
by
Abdullah Naser Ghali
It sounds odd when you perceive it at first, but haven't we all had a reminder that kept itching at the back of our heads whenever our phones vibrate while studying, for example. Some of us will surrender and check, while others will persevere and avoid looking at their phones. Even while I am typing this, I am keeping an eye out on my phone for any messages or notifications....
How You Can Help Students Adapt to Change in Online Classes -
by
Dr. Bruce A. Johnson
When students are assigned to an online class there is a general expectation that they will perform in a fairly uniform manner, which means they are expected to follow the rules, adhere to the school policies, and complete what is expected of them within the timeframe established. As instructors know, not all students are fully prepared to engage in the class or have all of the skills necessary to perform their best. There will likely be students, especially new or newer students, who will need to adapt in some manner and make changes of some kind. They may not even recognize that there are changes needed until it has been brought up by their instructor, through feedback or interactions in class....
Symmetry and Quantum Mechanics -
by
Scott A McKinney
Many times in mathematics, we discover unexpected connections between real world phenomena and theoretical math concepts. One example of this is in the behavior of subatomic particles like electrons, the subject of quantum mechanics. The mathematical study of symmetries provides a natural language for modelling quantum mechanics. Read on for more information about this....

Group Theory, Symmetries, and Quantum Mechanics -
by
Scott A McKinney
In mathematics, we often find unexpected connections between theoretical discoveries and real-world phenomena. One example of this is the connection between group theory - the study of symmetries - and the real world phenomena of quantum mechanics, which describes how subatomic particles behave. In this article, we get a basic grasp for what group theory is about....

A Bizarre Binary Star System -
by
Judith E Braffman-Miller
Cataclysmic variables are binary star systems that are usually composed of a type of superdense stellar corpse called a "white dwarf" and a normal star like our Sun. They are small systems--and the entire cataclysmic variable is usually only about the same size as our own Earth-Moon system, with an orbital period of a very brief 1 to 10 hours. In July 2015, an international team of astronomers, along with the valuable assistance of amateur astronomers, announced that the Gaia satellite has discovered a unique cataclysmic variable where one star is devouring the other--but neither of the two sister stars has any hydrogen! Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the Universe, and most stars are primarily composed of hydrogen, so this very bizarre system can provide an important tool for understanding how binary stars might blast themselves to pieces in mighty supernovae explosions at the end of their normal, main-sequence (hydrogen burning) lives! The system can be used as an important laboratory for the scientific study of ultra-bright supernova explosions, which provide a vital tool for measuring the expansion of the Universe....
Unexpected Connections in Mathematics: Descartes, Algebra, and Geometry -
by
Scott A McKinney
One remarkable fact about mathematics is the unexpected connections we often find between different areas of the subject. One such connection - in mathematical terms, isomorphism - is the correspondence between geometry, the study of shapes, and algebra, the study of numbers and their generalization in mathematical symbols. This article explores the connection between the two in simple and easy to understand terms....
