Starting a social club is a great way to forge new, lasting friendships in a new community. Here are a couple of options to get you started:
Gourmet Group: Several couples join together for a monthly gourmet dinner at one member’s home. Each dinner should be themed. The host and hostess provide a recipe for each guest to prepare and bring that evening.
Movie Night: Like a gourmet group, this event rotates from home to home. The host and hostess select a DVD/video for the group to view together. Popcorn and beverages can served during the movie. After the movie guests review the movie, its attributes and faults, as a group. The review can be summarized and submitted to this site for sharing. Dessert and beverages are provided by the hosts. A variation on the theme is to go to a movie theater each month and follow with dessert and review at the host’s home.
Book Club:Members select the book of the month as a group and meet once a month over lunch or dessert to discuss the selection. Amazon.com has all the latest great reads and can even ship the books to members. Each member might read their favorite passage during the meeting. Again, this event can rotate from home to home or can be held in a community gathering place.
Game Night: You don’t have to know how to play bridge to have a club that enjoys card and board games together. If bridge isn’t your bag, change the game each meeting. Try Hearts one evening, Monopoly or Trivia another. The host or hostess select the game. This too is particularly enjoyable when combined with dessert or lunch.
Wine Club: This group meets regularly to taste different varietals of wine. The host and hostess might provide a food pairing and request that each guest bring a bottle of wine for sharing. If you’re lucky enough to live near a wine growing region, a periodic outing makes it even more enjoyable. Over the holidays, members can create wine gifts or wine gift baskets using the group favorites.
