This is the first in a series of articles that will begin to follow-up on my recent one entitled: "How the Funeral Industry Can Begin Changing With the Times"
We all have experiences in life, mine have been neither more extraordinary nor less engaging than anyone else's, but have involved universally heartfelt sentiments I feel should be shared.
However, I never considered writing that seriously until about eighteen years ago. It was then that my mother approached my father, brothers, and I about an article she had read.
In it, a family had decided that during a one-year period they were all going to write a personal memento about how they felt about one another for their respective birthdays.
My mother thought that we should do the same thing, claiming they would make wonderful keepsakes. We were all horrified; "Imagine grown men writing down their feelings!" Nevertheless, we all set to work.
I had always liked the poem Footprints and loved how its meaningful last line made me feel no matter how many times, I've read it. And was somewhat surprised at how freely my words seemed to flow onto the page. Not surprisingly; "What I wrote always seemed to end with a meaningful last line."
After that first year past, I started to write more frequently being particularly inspired by those near and dear to my heart. Unfortunately, that not only meant writing on happy occasions like birthdays and anniversaries, but through tragedies as well.
The following is the story behind "A Mother's Work Is Never Done"
I remember my mother telling me during one of the many occasions we would gaze up at the stars in the sky over our family's cottage, that she had often thought since her own mother's passing that the brightest star was actually my grandmother, watching over her.
I have never forgotten it and have always believed that Mother's Day should be a time to reflect upon our most cherished memories, because whether your mother is still with you or not, she always lives in your heart.
So, for those still fortunate enough to have their mothers, I wish you and yours many wonderful years together and for those who are not as blessed, this is for you. I hope its message brings you joy.
A Mother's Work is Never Done
There are people, we cannot replace,
debts we can never repay,
times only we remember.
I recall your losing more than could be given,
giving more than could be repaid,
more times, than can be remembered.
My dreams are bountiful,
your misgivings fueled my desire to succeed,
your patience sustained me through adversity.
I always strived to do the same.
When that which we had seems forever lost,
I often look to the evening sky,
for a glimpse of the brightest star.
It assures me,
a mother's work is never done
and my journey has just begun.
