What Does LEADERSHIP Mean (And Stand For)?

Despite all the discussions, chatter, opinions, and focus on leadership, those entering positions, either via election or selection, often appear overwhelmed with their responsibilities, and confused as to what they should do, and what qualities and assets are most significant. In my over three decades of identifying, qualifying, training, developing and consulting to over one thousand actual or potential leaders, I have focussed on how each might potentially become the best he can be. However, although I believe I have widely studied and examined the necessities and qualification of effectively leading, I've come to the conclusion that, perhaps, the greatest challenge to the process, is clearly defining what LEADERSHIP means, and what a true leader must stand for.
1. Listen; learn: Everything begins with patience and taking the time to truly, effectively listen, to those one represents, as well as those with experience and expertise. However, until, and unless, you transform listening and learning, to genuine caring and understanding, and are willing to continuously proceed forward, there is little chance of quality leading.
2. Empathy: Never confuse being empathetic with merely being sympathetic. Sympathy is just feeling sorry for someone else, but lacks either the significance, or genuine connection that making the effort to see things as others do. Unless one leads from an empathetic perspective, he will fail to motivate others to care more, and become more involved.
3. Attention; articulate: If you really want to lead, you must understand how essential it is to pay attention to every detail that might impact your performance, etc. Yow will never be genuine, until and unless, you are willing to step forward and clearly articulate your message, ideas, and plans.
4. Determine; details: Develop quality judgment, and determine goals and priorities that are relevant and sustainable. Avoid mere generalities, but develop an action plan that produces details, and prepares for contingencies.
5. Earn respect; expectations; execution; excellence: Don't expect others to automatically respect you, merely because of the position you hold. You must earn this by what you say and do, and how you impact the group and its stakeholders. Never lower your expectations, in order to appear to succeed, but rather possess higher hopes that you set as your personal goals! However, greatness is never about merely voicing some niceties, but understand that one only becomes a real leader, when he executes his plan, professionally and expeditiously. Strive for excellence in every activity and action!
6. Relevant; reliable: Focus on doing your best, in a relevant way, that produces quality, reliable results.
7. Sustainable system: Leading is not merely about yesterday and/or today, but rather about developing and creating the most sustainable way to achieve!
8. Head/heart: Only when one balance his logical and emotional components, will he potentially achieve to his optimum degree!
9. Ideas; ideology; make an impact: Avoid merely being an office holder, or warming the proverbial chair! Rather, develop and introduce quality, relevant ideas, which coordinate with the highest ideals and ideology. Understand that you'll never lead if no one follows or gets affected, and thus produce the best impact for both the organization, as well as constituents.
10. Priorities-based: Avoid sweating, or over-focussing on the petty stuff! Proceed in a goals-oriented, priority-centric manner, and show that you understand what it means to lead.
You'll never be a great leader, if you fail to understand what is needed, and/ or involved. Show what LEADERSHIP means, in everything you do!
