Aquamarine gemstone is a cyan (varying from blue to green) variety of Beryl, a single mineral with several varieties distinguished by their colours. Emerald being the most well known for its vivid green colour. The term aquamarine is Latin for 'Water of the Sea' and it was known as the stone of coolness and relaxation and is generally believed to be the stone of calmness and peacefulness.
Gemstone quality Aquamarine is very rare although the mineral itself is reasonably abundant. The most valuable and sought after varieties of aquamarine are deep blue and mostly found in Brazil. The depth and intensity of the colour in aquamarines can vary hugely with some being almost totally colourless and others being intensely coloured.
The variety of colors of this stone is what makes it so popular and desirable among women and it has been popular with jewelers and designers for many years. The lighter examples of aquamarine are often confused with Topaz, another gemstone best known for its blue varieties.
Quality
Moreover, aquamarine is very hard, durable as well as affordable despite the fact that the costs associated with producing aquamarine is quite high. In fact it has several distinguishable qualities that make it unique among all other popular stones.
The aquamarine is also related to the emerald and they both are part of the beryl family. Its hardness is quite good and is about 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale. It is this hardness that makes this stone so strong and durable. Moreover, this hardness protects it from scratches something which makes it easy to keep and maintain.
Cuts
The aquamarine can be faceted into many cuts and it can be transparent as well as translucent. The aquamarine with its variety of colors and appearance is naturally so beautiful that whether it is faceted or not it appears striking and sparkling.
Moreover the hardness of this stone allows designers to deeply experiment with it thereby bringing out the beauty of the gem through curves, fine grooves, edges, notches and a lot of play of various techniques. Other than that, given its ability to be transformed into various cuts it is also used in making of sculptures and other art forms since it enables fine lines and cuts.
Producers
Aquamarine is not only abundant but also globally present in countries like Brazil - which is the largest producer of aquamarine - China, US, Pakistan, Myanmar and several other places. Brazil being the largest producer of Aquamarine does not only have it in abundance but also has such unique and amazing color combinations that are not found in the aquamarines in other countries.
