The 1934 World Cup was not exactly the same as the World Cup is today. In today's world we see dozens of teams get together to compete in the tournament that will crown one country as the World Champions for the next 4 years. These teams are selected as countries from all over the world go through qualifications in order to try to compete in the World Cup. While there was still one champion that was able to win in 1934, the number of teams was very different. There were 32 teams that attempted to qualify, but not all of them were allowed to participate in the finals tournament. There were only 16 teams that were able to participate in the tournament that lasted from the 27th of May to the 10th of June.
The event was scheduled to be hosted by Italy. Italy would start out by playing against the United States in game 1. This game was dominated by Italy as they were able to feed off of their home crowd. The United States was not able to hang with Italy and they were blown out by a score of 7-1.
All of the other games in the first round were much closer in score. Spain, Austria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Switzerland, Germany and Sweden managed to advance to the next round of play.
While Italy was dominant in game one, they were pushed to the limits in game two as they took on Spain. These teams tied 1-1 in regulation and they were forced to decide the winner by way of penalty kicks. The Italians ended up winning the match.
Austria and Hungary provided some great competition as the game went down to the wire. Austria managed to pull out the victory by a score of 2-1. Czechoslovakia and Germany also managed to overcome their opponents by margins of one goal.
When Czechoslovakia and Germany squared off it was clear that the team from Czechoslovakia was superior. They played great team ball and managed to take home a 3-1 victory. This victory secured them a spot in the final game against the winner of the other side of the bracket.
Italy would play Austria to determine which team would go all the way. This match was a defensive struggle as neither team was able to get things going on offense. In the end, the Italian defense was just too stingy. They were able to keep Austria from scoring and pulled out a 1-0 victory. Czechoslovakia and Italy would square off in the final game.
Czechoslovakia had been impressive but Italy had surrendered just 2 goals to that point in the tournament. They had a defense that was not easily breached. In the end Czechoslovakia did manage to put the ball into the net, but only one time. Italy got things rolling and managed to take home the victory with 2 goals. Italy would become the World Cup Champions while hosting the cup in their nation. Czechoslovakia would take 2nd place and Germany would win against Austria to take 3rd place.
