Outlook 2007 FAQ - Preview PDF Attachments

I bet you get lots of emails with PDF attachments. Me too. PDFs (documents formatted using the PDF or Portable Document Format from Adobe) are one of the more common ways to create documents that hold their appearance from computer to computer.

But unless you set things up right, you get stuck jumping out of Outlook to view the attachments. Life would certainly be easier if you could preview PDFs the way you can preview Word attachments.

Fortunately, this is easy to fix, because Adobe, the creators of the PDF format, has created a free Preview PDF add-in. That is, they have created an Outlook 2007 add-in for previewing PDF documents the same way Outlook can already preview Word documents or Excel spreadsheets. Here are some important things you should know about this add-in.

Why is this better than viewing the PDF attachment the old way?

Because you don't have to jump out of Outlook and view the PDF with Adobe Reader or some other viewer program. Instead, you get to preview the PDF right in Outlook's Reading Pane. You don't have to open a PDF viewing program. The information is right where it should be. In the Outlook Reading Pane.

Where do I download this Adobe Preview PDF add-in?

You download this previewer add-in at the Adobe website. The add-in is part of Adobe Reader, the free PDF viewing program that Adobe distributes. It will only take you a few minutes to download and install the reader and the add-in.

How hard is it to do?

If you can install programs on your computer, you can install the Adobe PDF Preview add-in. You can go online to find detailed instructions telling you exactly how to set this all up, from start to finish. With them, you will up and running in no time.
