Yahoo Outlook 2007 - Mistakes People Make When Setting Up a Yahoo Outlook Connection

If you use both Yahoo Mail and Outlook 2007, you've probably wished that you could work with your Yahoo messages in Outlook 2007, instead of having to handle your messages in multiple places. Well you can make a Yahoo Outlook 2007 connection pretty easily, if you know your way around all the pitfalls.

Here are a few of the mistakes that people tend to make when trying to configure Outlook for Yahoo Mail:

1. Using the Wrong Variety of Yahoo Mail

For reasons best known to themselves, Yahoo will not let you connect to your free Yahoo Mail account with Outlook (or any other mail program). To make this connection, you must upgrade your free account to a Yahoo Mail Plus account or a Yahoo Business Mail.

You don't have to change your email address or anything like that - the upgrade doesn't affect that. It gives you some additional capabilities including the ability to connect with Outlook. But it does cost you $19.95 a year for Mail Plus (still, that's only about $1.70 a month).

2. Trying to Use the Wrong Protocol

That sounds like some weird kind of jargon, but its not. People try to set up a Yahoo IMAP connection, because the IMAP protocol lets you do all sorts of neat stuff. But Yahoo Mail doesn't support IMAP, even after you upgrade to a Mail Plus or a Business Mail account. To make the connection with Outlook or any other mail program, you must use a POP3 connection. Not as powerful, but it gets the job done.

3. Trying to Figure Out all the Settings on Their Own

People assume that once they've upgraded their account they can set up the connection on their own. And they can, assuming they have the right advice.

There are a few obscure bits of information you need to set this up, and a gotcha or two that are tough to figure out if you haven't seen them before. Working with instructions from someone who has already set this up many times saves a lot of time and trouble.

So there you have it. Setting up a Yahoo Outlook 2007 connection is eminently doable. But it is a lot easier to do with a bit of help.
