Overcoming Fear With Meditation by Liam Schembri

Meditation is an effective method to overcome phobias and general fears. It helps cleanse the body and mind from negative thoughts and other obstacles that may prevent progress in life.

Before meditating, it is important to identify what your fears are and what fears you want to get rid of. Natural and unhealthy fears can be removed, such as the fear of dying, the fear of loss, the fear of impending marital/relationship problems and so on. You should then acknowledge that these fears are a result of your own negative thinking and actions. During meditation, you should visualize these fears together with their original causes in the form of thick smoke, and proceed to breathe it out. The release signifies the fears leaving your mind. As you inhale, imagine that you are breathing in pure and clean energy.

Repeating this process over a set period of time is an effective and proven method of overcoming fear, however it does require prior knowledge on how to enter the deep states of meditation.

An alternative and temporary method to overcome fear is to meditate whilst only thinking of positive thoughts. This method is useful for short term fears, where one may be nervous about an upcoming speech or driving test.

Whichever method you choose, remember that meditation doesn't have to be conducted on the hard floor with your legs crossed. Many have found that long, peaceful walks (with minimal noise and disturbances) work just as well, and can be much more effective when tackling fear.
