Double Strength Fish Oil – What's The Real Difference?

There are many companies now advertizing double strength fish oil, and pricing them up accordingly. Are these any better for your health and how can you find the best type? Discover what you need to know here and maximize the health benefits.

Having looked at many double strength fish oils and comparing them to the one I personally take, they still don't measure up.

These oils have been found to contain different amounts of omega 3 and different amounts of the main two fatty acids, DHA and EPA. In other words, this double strength labeling is extremely misleading and in essence means nothing!

Let me give you an example of what to look for, based on a healthy adult dose.

The most important fats are DHA as they give you most of the benefits. They are particularly important for the anti-inflammatory benefits that help to reduce your risk of sudden death from a heart attack or stroke.

You should get about 500mg of these DHA fats each day, from a dose of two standard fish oil capsules. You should also aim to get about half that amount in EPA.

Another problem with the double strength fish oil is that in many cases, you are also doubling the amount of toxins you get!

Unless the oil has been molecularly distilled, it could contain traces of mercury, arsenic, lead, PCBs and dioxins. Many manufacturers skip this process to save money and boost profits but leave you open to health risks.

There is only one type of oil that I know of that is totally pure and does not need distilling. It is the New Zealand hoki fish from the Southern Ocean. Here the waters are pristine and the hoki population is sustainable.

However, this type of pure oil must come with a CoA or Certificate of Analysis to prove its pureness and to show that there are no detectable levels of toxins.

The best oils should not cost more than around $20 a month. I have seen many so-called stronger ones sell for much more but with far less DHA. If you increase the amount of EPA, as many companies do, you gain very little extra benefits.

So there you have it, don't fall for the double strength fish oil hype but instead look at the label to ensure it contains plenty of DHA and is pure and safe.
