Why Many Fish Oil Brands Offer Little Benefits and Could Prove To Be Harmful

There's no doubt about it, many fish oil brands could result in you unwittingly ingesting traces of toxins from the fish. In addition, many of these actually contain very little of the right omega 3, resulting in few benefits. Discover how to only select the most effective and pure oils.

So many companies are now jumping on the fish supplement bandwagon as their popularity takes off. The downside is that many are out to make a quick buck, with little regard for your health or future well-being.

How to spot the bad oils

The main way fish oil brands can harm your health is if they have not been molecularly distilled.

Due to the polluted oceans today, the fish pick up toxins like mercury, lead and dioxins in their flesh and traces of these can be found in many supplements. As well as being harmful in their own right, they also significantly reduce the amount of benefits you get.

The distillation process removes all these toxins to give you safe and pure oil.

Bad oils can also have an enteric coating and flavorings which are unnecessary. These simply disguise the fact that the oil inside is stale or rancid.

If you open up a capsule and smell, you should only get a faint ocean aroma and not a strong fishy smell.

How to spot the best oils

These fish oil brands will be distilled and rich in the main omega 3 fatty acid DHA. Most are not and contain more of the less useful EPA fat.

Look for a 2:1 ratio of DHA to EPA with at least 270mg of DHA in each 1000mg capsule or gel. You should also check you are getting at least 50% omega 3 in each supplement too.

The best oils are pure and have not been previously frozen as this results in fewer benefits. Currently the most effective type is a blend of two species of fish – the New Zealand hoki and the South Pacific tuna.

This results in over two and a half times more anti-inflammatory benefits than any other oil!

Lastly, a good supplement should cost no more than $20 for a month's supply. At the other end of the scale, the very cheap ones tend to be very poor quality as I have described above.
