Driving When the Sun Is Down

Driving at night is something that most of try to avoid if we can. This is mostly due to the fact that when you drive at night, your visibility is greatly reduced, which means that you cannot see the road as well as you normally would during the day. Besides this, driving at night means that you get to deal with a whole host of different characters such as raccoons, deer, possums and other wildlife that may run out into the roadway in front of your vehicle at any given moment.
Many areas have streetlights that emit a relatively strong light, this makes it more difficult for drivers to remember to turn their lights on. However, many cars nowadays are equipped with automatic lights that will detect when it has gotten dark outside and will turn on by them. Another habit that you definitely want to make sure that you're following involves that of putting your seat belt on when you are inside of your car. Using your seat belt can save your life in the event that you do strike something while it is dark outside.
When you are first getting into your car, make it a habit to close your door, lock it immediately, turn your head lights on and then fasten your seat belt. Only after all of these steps are followed should you then turn the ignition to start your car. By performing these tasks in this way, you will not forget to do things that are vital to your safety as well as the safety of other drivers. One of the things that so many drivers fail to take into consideration is the fact that if they don't remember to turn on their head lights, it makes it much more difficult for other drivers to see them. For example, the other day, I was driving back from a soccer game at night when I noticed what appeared to be a single head light behind me. I immediately assumed that it was a motorcycle. However, when I prepared to switch lanes, I saw that the vehicle (which was now right behind me and also trying to switch lanes at the same time) was not a motorcycle but was, in fact, a car that was missing a headlight.
Because of the way that we were changing lanes, it made it appear as if the vehicle was still in the original lane that I had been in. Situations like these can be extremely dangerous as you can see. If you are planning on driving at night and you are by yourself, make sure that you park your vehicle in a parking space that is in an open, well lit area. For example, if you are attending classes at night at a college but your class starts when it is still light outside look for the most open area of the parking lot and look above you to see where the lights are. Park your vehicle in the appropriate space. It will be beneficial to your overall safety.
