When To Go Whale Watching In California

California sits along the migratory routes for a number of different species of whales. This makes it a great place to go whale watching. That being said, certain times of the year are better than others particularly as it pertains to different types of whales. Let's take a closer look.

Whales are some of the most majestic creatures in the world. They are huge in a way that you really can't understand until you get up near one. That being said, they are also the most graceful animal in the world in my honest opinion. If you can possibly imagine it, try to picture an animal the size of a ballerina that moves like an acrobat in a Cirque du Soleil show. If you ever get a chance to go whale watching, do it! I promise you will be amazed.

Okay, so what about California? What are the top times to see these amazing creatures? Well, it depends on what you want to see. Different types of whales commute up and down the coast at different times.

Perhaps the most popular whales are the Grey Whales. The Greys move from Alaska where they feed to the coast of Mexico where they breed. You can see them heading south from December through February. At 45 feet in length, they are amazing to watch. Personally, I prefer to head out to watch them in March and April when they head back north. Early April is particularly good because this is when the mothers bring their newborns, known as calves, back north. It is something to see.

Then there are the Blue Whales. They are the largest animals on the planet with average lengths of 80 feet or more. Think about that for a minute. These beautiful creatures are as long as a seven story building is high. That is huge! Blues are seen off the coast of California during the summer and early fall period. They are not easy to find unlike the Greys. You may see none on a trip. It is still worth trying however. Seeing a blue whale is such a transformative event that coming back empty every so often is a small price to pay. If all else fails, you'll probably see Humpbacks which are in the area during this time as well.

California is a great place to see the largest animals in the world. There grace and elegance will amaze you.
