Known as one of the world's most ancient civilizations, Karnataka is a state filled with a rich culture, glorious traditions and is an enchanting land abounding with breathtaking beauty. Two World Heritage sites are located in Karnataka, namely Hampi and Pattadakal. Karnataka is also popularly known for its Agarbathi (Incense Sticks), Silk, Coffee and Sandalwood. This state offers a wide variety of attractions which in turn catches the attention of a wide array of people from different parts of the world making this a destination one must place on their travel itinerary.
This scenic state is blessed with an abundance of beautiful flora and fauna. Nearly 22 per cent of its land mass is made up of rich green forests and is also home to Asia's highest waterfall - the Jog Falls. Wild Game sanctuaries at Bandipur, Dandeli and Nagarhole are a major tourist attraction. With picturesque and charming hill stations located close to its coastline, this is an ideal hotspot for tourists who love waking up to the sound of birds chirping and nature smiling at them.
The passage between the Bangalore-Mysore highway is considered the place to be for rock climbing. For those who are completely into adventure sports there are many white-water rafting locations across the state such as on the river Cauvery. Water sport lovers can glide along the Sharavathy backwaters, ideal for canoeing and windsurfing. The Western Ghats are filled with more than 250 trails for keen and passionate trekkers.
From high-end accommodations to cheap housing facilities, Karnataka caters to the interest of every avid tourist. Karnataka has been a cultural hub for more than a hundred years and this can be viewed in its magnificent and awe-inspiring temples, statues, and historical structures. Temples at Aihole, Halebedu, Belur, Badami and Pattadakal are greatly admired by art lovers and are considered to be architectural achievements in art circles. Native colourful art and original handcrafts which have a rich cultural legacy add lustre to this major tourist destination.
People from different faiths have also added to the heritage of Karnataka. Muslims and Christians have contributed to Karnataka's glory in art and architecture. The Gol Gumbaz, the Ibrahim-Roza, the Daria Daulat Bagh (Summer Palace) of Tippu Sultan and the many churches scattered around cities like Mysore, Bangalore and Bijapur are just a few of the many appealing characteristics Karnataka has to offer.
