Apply For a Passport by Sturat Mitchel

When you want to go overseas especially for work as an expat, the first thing that comes to mind is how to apply for a passport if you don't have one already. This important document, which is issued by the US Department of State, confirms your nationality as well your citizenship.

Beginning in year 2007, you need to bring along your passport whenever you travel, including Canada and Mexico. Even in some commonwealth countries such as Puerto Rico where you may not need to have this document as an expat, it is still recommended that you do. Here is how to apply for a passport:

There are more than 8000 places at which you can apply for a passport. Go to one of the post offices where there is a passport acceptance facility and bring along the following:

1. Two identical passport photographs of yourself, taken within a period of six months.
2. Your birth certificate
3. Your photo identification
4. A new US passport application

After application, you may receive the passport in either one of two ways. Get your passport via 'routine service' in three month's time (or less) with an application fee of $67 and an execution fee of $30, totaling $97.

You may also get your passport via 'expedited passport service' from one to three weeks. The application, execution and expedited service fee is $67, $30 and $60 respectively, totaling $157. If you arrange for over-night delivery, add $20 to $50 to that amount. You can use over-night delivery to send your application for processing and for its return from the US State Department.
