BBC iPlayer is set to go global, with the first step in its conquest being the iPad subscription service. Thee BBC plans to unroll a paid-for International subscription service. The new service is expected to hit the US first and will remain in pilot mode until it's given the green light by the BBC trust.
The iPad would fall under the BBC's worldwide service, a commercial section of the corporation. Luke-Bradley Jones, who is the MD for BBC.com said that the idea was to tap into the early adopters market.
"We're quite bullish about what we can charge, but we are still working out the details", he said.
Jones also outlined the decision to choose the Apple iPad to be part of the service. He said that Apple's tablet "provides such potential to develop a truly interactive video-on-demand ser vice, and also maps pretty nicely on to our core target audience for the service".
The new global iPlayer will have to see of tough competition from the likes of Hulu and Netflix in the States for video on demand iPad fans, but it is hoped that the BBC's reputation for high quality programming could be enough to persuade Johnny Foreigner and his buddies to part with their hard earned-cash.
The BBC iPlayer worldwide service is expected to be available on iPads worldwide, starting in the US in mid-2011. If the service is successful it's expected to be released on other platforms too.
